Archaeometric Identification of a Perfume from Roman Times

چکیده

Although archaeological excavations have recovered a large number of vessels used to hold perfumes or ointments in ancient Rome, little is known about the chemical composition origin substances they contained. Most available information pertains ointment and/or cosmetic bases rather than essences. The discovery 2019 an jar (unguentarium) made rock crystal (quartz) that was sealed with stopper and contained solid mass Roman tomb Carmona (Seville, Spain) unusual finding. This paper reports results archaeometric study unguentarium its contents. Based on them, comparisons commercially patchouli nard oil standards, perfume held probably patchouli. To our knowledge, this may be first time from times has been identified, which major advance field. consisted dolomite, material also unknown type use, bitumen seal stopper.
